I've used my fingers in previous paintings to get a smooth, interesting colored sky. It's not a hard technique and it works out really well when using acrylics. However, this time I decided to try something different and a tad more difficult. I'm using finger painting for water.
Now don't be quick to dismiss finger painting as just a messy and rather childish way of painting. Think about it this way instead: you utilize your fingers just like a brush, and depending on the way you use those fingers you can get a variety of different results. You can smear, dot, blot, dab, wiggle, the list goes on.
Me personally, in my first painting that I utilized this technique I painted the sky using the smearing technique. I first applied different colors (black, white, and yellow) to the canvas and then closed my eyes. I then proceeded to smear them over the entire canvas. Closing my eyes was so I wouldn't automatically try and make the paint "go the way I wanted" and potentially mess it up, and instead did it intuitively. It was fun and turned out awesome. Then once it dried I applied the other elements (of which were painted on with techniques other than finger painting).
The painting I'm currently working on I decided on using a different technique. I first used a circling technique. However, I layered the look so that with each color I added the detailing would look far more intricate. Once I'd gotten enough layers on I then used a dabbing technique which added even more texture to the painting. The end results were fantastic in my opinion.
I'm still not finished with my current painting as I've only done the water. I'm still deciding on my main focal point and how I want to paint that focal point. Regardless, it's been fun painting so far, and while I've been using my fingers to paint IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE I HAVE!
It really does just depend on how you use your tools, even if they are attached to your body.
